Today I will disassemble a Dell Inspiron 1564 laptop.
My goal is removing and replacing the cooling fan which is mounted deep inside the case.
Make sure the laptop is turned off.
STEP 1.
Unlock and remove the main battery.
STEP 2.
Loosen three screws securing the cover on the bottom.
Lift up and remove the cover.
Under the cover you can access the hard drive, both RAM modules, wireless card and CMOS battery.
This laptop can handle up to 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-12800 SODIMM RAM modules.
STEP 3.
Remove four screws securing the hard drive mounting bracket to the case.
Slide the hard drive to the left to disconnect it from the motherboard.
Lift up and remove the hard drive.
Upgrading this regular 2.5″ hard drive to a 2.5″ solid state drive will speed up the laptop significantly.
STEP 4.
Remove one screw securing the optical drive.
Slide the optical drive to the left and pull it from the case.
STEP 5.
Remove one screw securing the power button cover.
STEP 6.
Carefully separate the power button cover from the top cover.
STEP 7.
I am using a guitar pick to separate two parts.
STEP 8.
Lift up the cover. Be careful, the power button board still connected to the motherboard.
STEP 9.
Unlock the connector by lifting up the retainer with your fingernail (green arrow).
After that pull the cable from the connector (yellow arrow).
Now you can remove the power button cover completely.
STEP 10.
Remove three screws securing the keyboard.
STEP 11.
Lift up the keyboard and turn it upside down on the palm rest.
STEP 12.
Now you can access the keyboard cable connector.
STEP 13.
Unlock the connector.
1. Lift up the retainer (green arrow).
2. Pull the cable (yellow arrow).
STEP 14.
Now you can remove the keyboard.
STEP 15.
Remove all marked screws from the bottom of the laptop.
Don’t forget three smaller screws in the optical drive bay.
STEP 16.
Disconnect two antenna cables from the wireless card.
STEP 17.
Remove both antenna cables from the routed path on the bottom.
STEP 18.
Pull both antenna cables thought the opening in the top cover.
STEP 19.
Remove six screws securing the top cover (palm rest) assembly.
Disconnect the touchpad cable.
STEP 20.
Separate the top cover assembly from the bottom case.
STEP 21.
Remove the top cover assembly completely.
On the other side of top cover you can access the touchpad.
When the top cover removed you can access the cooling fan, optical drive connector, USB board and motherboard.
STEP 22.
Remove two screws securing the fan.
Unplug fan cable from the motherboard.
STEP 23.
Lift up and remove the fan.
Clean it up from dust or replace if necessary.
In a Dell Inspiron 1564 laptop the DC jack can be easily removed and replaced.
Simply disconnect the jack cable from the motherboard, remove one screw securing the jack and remove it from the case.
In my previous post I explained how to replace Dell Inspiron 1564 screen.

Hi,
This is very nicely explained, thank you.
I am really surprised by the arrangement of Dell. Other laptops like Samsung and Lenevo give much simpler way to change the fan without removing the keyboard, touchpad or motherboard.

Excellent dis-assembly directions. Have my cooling fan out and ready for cleaning and testing.
However, aside from that:
I did discover two little screws on my 1564 also needed removal to remove the power button cover. The screw heads were located underside rear middle either side of the battery connector.
Note: you can see one of the threaded brass inserts on the underside of the power button
cover (for one of the screws) in the step 8 picture on the right hand side of the picture.
Thanks for the guidance. I hate snap assemblies for I never know if I’m forcing something to the breaking point so this instruction set saved the day!

Hey guy this just has to be the best ever. Never thought I could do this, I work as a mechanical engineer on heavy equipment the smallest bolts I use are 10mm, but following your step by step gave me all the confidence to have a go. By the way I also used the tutorial for display replacement to change the screen and cam ribbon.
you’re good man for sharing.
